At present, the Chief Justice of India i.e. CJI gets a salary of around Rs 2.80 lakh per month, whereas the salary of the remaining judges of the Supreme Court is around Rs 2.50 lakh per month. Apart from this, they are provided a residence by the government to live. Apart from this, many facilities are provided to the CJI by the government including car, security personnel, staff and electricity cost of his residence.
Apart from all this, the Chief Justice is also given a hospitality allowance of Rs 45 thousand. When the CJI retires, he is also given an annual pension of Rs 16.80 lakh. What was the salary of judges at the time of independence?
After independence, when the country adopted its Constitution and the Supreme Court was established on 26 January 1950, a new era of justice began. On this historic day, India got its first Chief Justice, Justice HJ Kania. In 1915, he started practicing law in the Bombay High Court. He soon became famous due to his hard work and understanding of law. He became acting judge in 1930, additional judge in 1931 and permanent judge in 1933. Besides, he was also the acting Chief Justice in 1944-45.
When the Supreme Court was formed in 1950, the salary of the first CJI was fixed at Rs 5,000 per month. This was considered a good amount at that time, but it also reflected the simplicity of the post. Also, Justice Kania was famous for his calm nature, simplicity and justice.
