The responsibility of the country’s maritime security is now going to be in new hands. Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed the next Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. He will assume charge on 31 May 2026. Currently he is the Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command based in Mumbai. The current Navy Chief is Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi is retiring on May 30, after which this responsibility will be handed over to Swaminathan.
Krishna Swaminathan was born in Bengaluru. His father D. Swaminathan and mother Shanta Swaminathan were both teachers. That is, the atmosphere at home was related to studies and discipline from the very beginning. He did his early education from the famous Bishop Cotton Boys’ School in Bengaluru.
After this, he studied in Sainik School, Bijapur, from where the foundation of army and discipline in him became stronger. Later, he completed his higher military education from National Defense Academy (NDA), Pune. From here his journey moved towards the Indian Navy.
Received training from major military institutions of the world
Krishna Swaminathan has taken advanced military training not only in India but also abroad. He studied at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, United Kingdom. Apart from this, he also received important military training from the College of Naval Warfare, Karanja and the United States Naval War College.

Navy’s journey started in 1987
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1987. After this he gradually created a distinct identity with his work. He is considered an expert in communications and electronic warfare.
How much salary will you get?
After becoming the Navy Chief, Krishna Swaminathan will have a big responsibility for the security of the country’s maritime borders. The Indian Navy Chief gets a basic salary of around Rs 2.5 lakh per month. Apart from this, they also get Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) and other government facilities. Besides, they are also given facilities like government accommodation and security.
