How To Prevent Fungal Infection In Summer: With the arrival of summer season, not only the temperature increases, but skin related problems also start increasing rapidly. Strong sunlight, sweat, humidity and prolonged moisture in the skin create the perfect environment for fungal infections. This is the reason why more cases of itching, red rashes, ringworm and fungal infections between the toes are seen in summer. This problem has become quite common especially in hot and humid countries like India. According to NIH, superficial fungal infections are among the most common skin problems in tropical countries.
Why do cases of fungal infections increase in the summer season?
Skin expert Dr. Nidhi Rohatgi says that not only fungal but also bacterial and viral infections increase in summer. He says that fungus likes warm and moist environment the most. Just as fungus quickly spreads on clothes and food items during the rainy season or summer, similarly the infection spreads rapidly in those parts of the body where there is excessive sweating. The risk is highest in the underarms, around the thighs, between the toes and in the skin folds.
Wearing clothes, tight jeans or synthetic clothes can be harmful.
Many times our daily habits increase this problem more than the weather. Wearing sweaty clothes for a long time, using tight jeans or synthetic clothes and wearing shoes and socks for hours can cause growth of fungus. Dr. Rohatgi advises that in summers one should wear as loose and cotton clothes as possible, so that the skin keeps getting air.
This is the biggest mistake you make after bathing
Not drying the body properly after bathing is also considered a big mistake. Often people leave the skin folds wet in a hurry, due to which moisture remains there and fungus starts growing. Apart from this, sharing towel and soap can also cause spread of infection.

Do you apply cream without consulting a medical expert?
Nowadays, another problem which is increasing rapidly is buying and using creams from medical stores without consultation. NIH has previously warned that steroid creams can make fungal infections more stubborn. In the beginning, itching and redness are less visible, but the fungus keeps growing inside. Dr. Rohatgi also advises to avoid applying such creams without consultation.
Experts believe that there is no need for very expensive products to keep the skin healthy in summer. Small habits like bathing daily, changing sweaty clothes immediately, wearing dry clothes in the sun and keeping the body dry can protect against fungal infections to a great extent.
