CBI Chief Salary: The country’s largest investigation agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is once again in the news. The tenure of current CBI Director Praveen Sood is ending and now the name of the new CBI Chief can be announced any time. According to sources, no consensus could be reached on the name of the new director in the meeting held in the PMO on Tuesday, hence now it is expected that the new name will be announced by Wednesday evening. The role of CBI has become even more important amid big cases like NEET paper leak in the country and the ever-increasing investigative responsibilities, hence everyone’s eyes are fixed on the new chief. In such a situation, it is natural for the question to arise in the minds of people that what is the salary of the CBI Chief and who appoints him to this big post?
Praveen Sood’s tenure and current status
Praveen Sood is a senior IPS officer of Karnataka cadre. He was made CBI director three years ago. He was working on extension for the last one year after completion of his prescribed tenure of two years. Now his extended tenure is also going to end. Also, this time a big process is going on for the selection of CBI Director, in which a list of names of 39 IPS officers has been prepared. One of these 39 senior officers will be chosen as the new CBI chief. The final decision has not been taken yet, but it is expected that the new name will be announced soon.

What is the salary of CBI director?
The post of CBI Director is counted among the biggest and most responsible government posts in the country. According to the same reports, the fixed basic salary of CBI Director is Rs 80 thousand per month. Apart from this, many types of allowances are also available on basic salary. In which dearness allowance is 120 percent of the basic salary. The same special incentive allowance of 15 percent is available. Apart from this, DA is also added. After which the salary of CBI Director increases from Rs 1.60 lakh to Rs 2.20 lakh per month. Whereas the salary of a High Court judge is around Rs 2.25 lakh per month. Also, this salary is considered equal to that of a Secretary level officer of the Government of India. Apart from salary, they are also given many government facilities. However, the officer working on this post is always responsible for big and sensitive matters, hence this job is considered as challenging as it is respectable.
Who appoints CBI Chief?
CBI Director is not appointed by any one person, rather a special selection committee is formed for this. This committee includes the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court or any judge recommended by him. This committee discusses the names of several senior IPS officers and then one officer is made the CBI chief. Before 1977, the government could remove the CBI director at its own will. But after Vineet Narayan case this is no longer possible. The tenure of the CBI Director is at least two years. So that any director can work independently without pressure. Also, Praveen Sood was appointed under the same process.
