Every year lakhs of candidates appear in NEET exam. This year also the exams were held but the exams were canceled amid reports of paper leaks. Now a new date can be announced soon by NTA. For which all the candidates are waiting. But do you know about the distribution of seats for admission in medical colleges through NEET UG? If not then today we will tell you…

First of all let us talk about 15% All India Quota. Students from all over the country compete for the seats under this. It includes central institutions like AIIMS, JIPMER, BHU, AMU and other central universities. The reservation policy of the Central Government is strictly implemented on these seats. This is where the fixed percentage applies for different classes, which is the same in the entire country.

The pattern of reservation in All India Quota and central institutions is like this: OBC (non-creamy layer) gets 27% seats. Economically weaker section i.e. EWS gets 10% seats. 15% seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe (ST). Apart from this, 5% seats are kept for PwBD i.e. disabled students. This 5% reservation is horizontal, that is, it is applicable within all categories General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST.

What is state quota?

Now let’s talk about 85% state quota. Most of the seats in government medical colleges fall in this quota. Only those students who are residents of that state or who have studied there can claim these seats. Here the reservation pattern is decided by the state government, because health is a state subject. Therefore, the percentage of OBC or other categories may be slightly different in different states. However, categories like SC, ST and EWS remain applicable in almost every state.

Required for special categories

There are some special categories also. 5% reservation for PwBD is applicable everywhere. Horizontal reservation is also available for children of defense personnel in many states and colleges. There are also NRI and management quotas in private and deemed universities, where the fees are different and the rules may also be different.
