After UPSC, who will become IAS, who will become IPS? Know who has what command in his hand

Every year when UPSC results come, some names flash in the news. People say “He became IAS”, “She became IPS”. Both sound similar, but actually these are two different stories. It is a story of offices, meetings and decisions. The second story is of uniform, field and action. Both of them start with the same exam, but later on their world, responsibilities and way of working changes completely.

Candidates who top the UPSC merit list often get IAS. The next higher rank is IPS. From here the direction of both is decided. IAS officers go to Mussoorie Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. While IPS officer Hyderabad reaches Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.

From files to decisions

IAS officers are the face who bring the government to the ground. It is they who decide how the plans will move from paper to villages and cities. These officers become DM in the district. The command of the entire district is in their hands. Sometimes floods, sometimes elections, sometimes development schemes, IAS plays a role everywhere. Sitting in ministries, they make policies, take decisions and take the system forward. The day of an IAS is spent in meetings, files, plans and reviews.

IPS officers command the police department. They become SP in the district. Preventing crime, investigating, maintaining peace is their daily work. Be it riots, crime or security threat, IPS is found standing at the forefront. Later, these officers become DGP and handle the police system of the entire state. IPS spends its day in patrolling, investigation, police force and spot action.

Salary and facilities

The starting salary of both starts from Rs 56,100 according to the 7th Pay Commission. As the position increases, salary and facilities also increase. IPS officers reach up to DGP, IAS officers reach up to secretary level. The salary on these posts is quite good as well as the facilities.
