Petrol Pump Fraud: Complaints of fraud at petrol pumps often come to the fore. Most people complain that they do not get full value of oil for their money. Apart from this, people also have complaints regarding adulteration. To avoid this type of fraud, it is very important to remain alert. Still, many times the pump employees are found engaging in conversation or creating mess in other ways. Today we are going to tell you how the petrol pump machine goes wrong and how to detect such fraud.
How does it go wrong?
Chip’s help is taken- According to reports, many times pump employees put chips in the machines. With the help of this remote controlled chip, the reading in the meter is correct, but the oil in the vehicle is less. Due to this, the customer has to pay the full amount, but in return he does not get the full amount of petrol or diesel.
Zero Scam- This is the easiest and common method of fraud at petrol pumps. In this, the employees start filling oil without setting the machine to zero. Due to this, the earlier reading is also added to your bill, due to which you have to pay more money, even though your vehicle has not been filled with that much oil.
Jump Trick- This method of fraud is also quite popular. In this the meter reading jumps suddenly. That is, the display on which the price is shown to you, after starting from 0, does not move forward in the order of 2, 3, 4, 5… but goes straight to 10, 20, 30. Due to this, less oil is filled, but the full amount is taken. The customer may incur a loss of up to Rs 100 if he pours 10 liters of oil.
What are the techniques to avoid fraud?
- While filling oil at the petrol pump, get off the car and go near the machine and keep an eye on the reading.
- If employees try to talk to you, keep an eye on their actions.
- If the machine suddenly jumps, check the oil level using the gauge placed there.
- If you suspect oil adulteration, ask for a filter paper test. Due to adulteration, a stain will remain on the paper.
- If you find any adulteration or measurement error, you can lodge a complaint on the helpline, mobile app or website of the concerned company.
