WHO Says Covid Deaths Were Underreported: The real picture may be much scarier than the figures that were revealed around the world regarding the Corona epidemic. A new report by the World Health Organization has claimed that the actual number of deaths during the epidemic was almost three times more than what was officially recorded. According to the report, about 2.21 crore additional deaths occurred worldwide between 2020 and 2023, while during the same period countries had confirmed only about 70 lakh corona deaths.
What was revealed in the report of the World Health Organization?
According to the World Health Organization, these additional deaths not only include deaths due to corona infection, but also include those who died due to the indirect effects of the epidemic. During the pandemic, the pressure on hospitals in many countries had increased so much that other patients could not get timely treatment. There was a shortage of doctors and health workers in many places, while people were not able to get treatment for other serious diseases due to the lockdown and disruption in health services.
In which year were there the maximum deaths?
It was told in the report that the most dangerous phase of the epidemic was the year 2021. During this period, about 1.04 crore additional deaths were recorded in the world. This was the same time when more dangerous variants of Corona were spreading rapidly and hospitals around the world were struggling with shortage of oxygen, ICU beds, medicines and medical staff. Although the number of excess deaths started declining after 2021, the impact of the pandemic did not end completely. According to the report, in the year 2023 also about 33 lakh additional deaths were recorded across the world. It is clear from this that the effect of Corona continued for a long time even after the big waves of infection ended.
Women or men, who dies the most?
The report of the World Health Organization also revealed that during the pandemic, the risk of death among men was higher than that of women. In the year 2021, the death rate of men was about 50 percent more than that of women. Experts believe that there could be many reasons behind this like pre-existing diseases, high risk during work and delay in getting treatment.

People of which age group died the most?
Age also became a major cause of death in the epidemic. According to the report, the death rate among people aged 85 years and above was about 10 times higher than that of youth. Problems like diabetes, heart disease, lung problems and weak immune system were already present in the elderly, due to which corona infection proved to be more fatal for them. The report also said that in many poor and developing countries, the actual number of deaths has never been revealed, because the system of registering deaths and recording health data there is very weak.
