A1 vs A1 Milk: Milk is considered an important part of Indian food. Milk is used in almost every house, from morning tea to children’s breakfast and light dinner. But in the last few years the debate regarding A1 and A2 milk has intensified. A2 milk is being sold in the market as more healthy and easily digestible. Whereas many people consider it just a marketing trend. In such a situation, the biggest question in the minds of people is what is the difference between A1 and A2 and which milk is considered better for health.
What is A1 and A2 milk?
Casein protein constitutes about 80 percent of the total protein present in milk. Beta casein is mainly found in it. Among the different types of beta casein, A1 and A2 are most discussed. A1 type beta casein is found in A1 milk. Whereas A2 type beta casein is present in A2 milk. Scientists believe that there is only one amino acid difference between these two proteins, but they have different effects on the body.
Which cow gives A1 and A2?
The type of milk largely depends on the breed of cow. The milk of Indian indigenous cows like Gir, Sahiwal, Red Sindhi and Tharparkar breeds is generally considered A2. Whereas Holstein, Friesian and some European breeds of cows have A1 milk. Many packaged milks available in the general market may contain A1 and A2 types of proteins, while A2 contains only A2 beta casein.
How does it affect digestion?
The biggest discussion regarding A1 and A2 milk is about digestion. Research has revealed that when A1 milk is digested, a peptide called BCM-7 i.e. Beta Morphine-7 is formed in the body. Some scientists link it to stomach related diseases. Experts say that some people may suffer from gas, bloating and stomach problems after drinking A1 milk. Whereas during the digestion of A2 milk, very little or no BCM-7 is produced. Therefore it is considered light on the stomach.
