We see the map of India every day in books, on walls, on mobile screens. But have you ever thought that this map was always like this? The states and districts that we know today were not like this earlier. Names of many places changed, boundaries changed and many new districts were suddenly formed. Now we are getting a chance to see the entire story of these changes in one place.
A team from FLAME University in Pune has started a special project named “The India State Stories”. In this project, the changing boundaries, names and maps of the states and districts of India from 1941 to 2021 have been linked together. It is a free online platform, where the geographical and administrative journey of India is explained through maps, tables, articles and podcasts.
According to media reports, there is often a big debate on the formation of a country or state. People discuss, movements take place, decisions are taken. But the story of formation of districts is different. Many times districts are formed just by a government order. For example, in 2016, Telangana tripled its number of districts. In 2022, Andhra Pradesh increased 13 districts to 26.

Trying to bring information into one place
The problem was that there was no common record of these changes. It was not easy to search together the information scattered in different government documents, census reports and files. Many cities were earlier considered districts, later their status changed. The boundaries of many districts changed repeatedly. In such a situation, if any person wanted to understand the long-term story, he would have to work very hard.
Keeping this need in mind, this project was started. Professor Shivkumar Jolad, the founding director of this initiative, says that there are many untold stories from the regions of India. If you want to understand the long term, you need to know what changed.
Useful for everyone, from researchers to common people
This website is not just for researchers. Even common people can see and understand it easily. The first question that comes up on the website is that India has been called a union of states in the Constitution, but the states that existed in 1950 were not like they are today.
