The health of Indian cricket team’s young opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal suddenly deteriorated. On 16 December 2025, while playing for Mumbai against Rajasthan in the Super League match of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), Yashasvi suffered severe stomach pain. After the end of the match, his pain increased so much that he was admitted to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital located in Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune. What happened during the match?

The match was going on between Mumbai and Rajasthan at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Mumbai won the toss and bowled first. Yashasvi Jaiswal came out to open. He started having stomach cramps right at the beginning of the match. Despite this, he remained on the field and made a partnership of 41 runs with Ajinkya Rahane. However, Yashasvi was out after playing 16 balls. His pain increased after the match. When his condition became serious, he was taken to the hospital.

What came to light in the investigation?

Yashasvi was admitted in emergency to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Pimpri-Chinchwad (near Pune). There a team of gastroenterologist doctors examined him. Ultrasound (USG) and CT scan were done. During examination, swelling was found in the stomach and intestines, due to which acute gastroenteritis was diagnosed. Doctors have given him medicines, so that there is no shortage of water in the body and pain is reduced.

What is this disease and why does it occur?

Senior gastroenterologist of the hospital, Dr. Amit Sharma told that Yashasvi has suffered from a disease called acute gastroenteritis. This is a common problem of stomach infection, which people often call stomach bug or vomiting and diarrhea disease. At present, Yashasvi’s condition is stable. Dr. Sharma said that this disease is usually caused by virus or bacteria and gets cured in a few days. He said that such problems can quickly become serious in athletes because their bodies work harder. In such a situation, hospitalization is necessary.

How dangerous is this disease?

This disease causes inflammation in the inner lining of the stomach and small intestine. In most cases it is caused by viruses (such as norovirus or rotavirus). Sometimes it is caused by contaminated food or water or bacteria. In most people, this disease cures itself in 3-7 days. If there is dehydration i.e. severe lack of water in the body, then this condition can be dangerous. If treated on time, this disease is not dangerous.

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea (watery)
  • mild fever
  • fatigue and weakness
  • loss of appetite
