Paracetamol Pregnancy Risks: Women often have fears and questions regarding medicines during pregnancy. Recently, it has become widely known that if paracetamol (called Tylenol in America) is taken during pregnancy, it can increase the risk of autism in the child. According to a large research study published in the medical journal The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women’s Health, no direct link was found between taking paracetamol correctly during pregnancy and autism, ADHD or mental development in children. What does the new study say?
In this big research, 43 different clinical studies were analyzed. Apart from this, study of data of about 25 lakh children in Sweden was also included. Researchers specifically adopted the sibling comparison method, that is, children of the same mother were compared in whom paracetamol was taken during one pregnancy and not in the other. In such a situation, its result was clear, no difference was found in the risk of autism or other mental problems in both the children.
Does consuming paracetamol during pregnancy cause autism in the child?
Some earlier studies had shown a slight connection with consuming paracetamol during pregnancy, but now scientists have said that this was not the real reason. In fact, women who took paracetamol had problems like fever, pain or infection. These problems can also affect the development of the child itself. Genetic reasons also play a role. It is because of these confounding factors that earlier wrong conclusions were drawn. Due to which people thought that consuming paracetamol during pregnancy causes autism in the child.
What do experts say?
According to experts, paracetamol is still considered the safest painkiller during pregnancy. It is safer than NSAIDs and opioids. It is okay to take it in small quantities and when needed. This medicine is also included in the list of essential medicines of the World Health Organization (WHO).

When can it be dangerous not to take this medicine?
Many times women avoid taking medicine due to fear, but it can be more dangerous. If fever during pregnancy is not treated or the pain is ignored, it can lead to the risk of miscarriage, premature delivery or congenital problems in the child. Therefore, it is very important to take treatment as per the doctor’s advice.

1. Take paracetamol only when really needed.
2. Follow the doctor’s advice before and while taking the medicine.
3. Do not take medicine in more quantity or for a longer period than you feel like.
