Why Do I Wake Up With Dry Mouth And Bad Breath: When we wake up in the morning, our mouth feels dry and smells bad, then we often ignore it considering it as normal “morning breath”. But sometimes this is not just the effect of a night’s sleep, but can also be a sign of some disturbances going on inside the body. In fact, our mouth is a kind of mirror of the body, which tells us how the body handled water, breathing and digestion during the night. Let us explain in detail,
What do experts say?
Dr. Gargi Singh Thakur told TOI that dry mouth or foul smell in the morning can be a sign of dehydration, poor sleep or metabolic problems. Actually, when we sleep, saliva production in the body reduces. This saliva keeps our mouth clean, controls bacteria and removes food particles. As soon as its quantity decreases, bacteria start growing rapidly and the smell becomes more felt in the morning.
What is the cause of dry mouth?
Dehydration is also a major reason for dry mouth. If there is a lack of water in the body, the body gives priority to the essential organs and less saliva starts being produced in the mouth. Sleeping in AC, consuming caffeine or alcohol at night can further increase this problem. Another reason is mouth breathing. Many people breathe through the mouth due to blocked nose, allergies or habit, due to which the mouth dries quickly and bacteria start growing. It may also be a sign of poor sleep, as mouth breathing is often associated with snoring and disrupted sleep.

effect of sleep quality
Quality of sleep also plays an important role here. If sleep is frequently interrupted or is not deep, the nervous system gets affected and the production of saliva further reduces. This is the reason why people who are unable to sleep properly have more problems in the morning. Sometimes the cause of bad smell is also related to digestion. If food is not digested properly, some elements start accumulating in the body, which come out through breath and cause bad smell. Acid reflux or irregular eating habits can further increase this problem.
Stress and some medicines can also increase this problem. Stress changes the way of breathing and less saliva is produced. At the same time, some medicines like antihistamines or blood pressure medicines can also make the mouth dry.
