Can Hair Extensions Cause Breast Cancer: Millions of women around the world use hair extensions, but a recent research has raised concerns about the possible dangers associated with it. This study found that hair extensions may contain chemicals that can affect breast cancer, hormonal imbalance and reproductive health. In this research published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, scientists analyzed many types of extensions, such as wigs, braiding hair, clip-ins and waves. Dozens of dangerous chemicals were found in almost every sample.
What came out in the research?
According to Dr. Alicia Franklin, lead author of the research, the biggest concern is that information about many chemicals present in these products is not fully disclosed. Many times companies do not disclose all the ingredients, due to which users are unknowingly taking risks. Hair extensions are considered especially dangerous because they remain in contact with the scalp, neck and skin for a long time. In such a situation, the chemicals present in them can slowly enter the body and cause harm in the long run.

A total of 43 samples were examined in the study, in which about 170 chemicals were found. There were many of these which fall in the category of carcinogenic, endocrine disruptors, hormone affecting and toxic substances. In particular, elements like phthalates, organotin and some industrial chemicals were revealed, which can affect the hormonal system of the body. This is the same system that controls reproduction, development and many important body functions.
Symptoms of breast cancer also
The surprising thing was that chemicals related to breast cancer were also found in some samples. Scientists say that these substances can cause such changes in the body, which can increase the risk of cancer over time. Interestingly, dangerous chemicals were found not only in synthetic but also in extensions made from 100 percent natural or human hair. This means that just having a natural label does not make the product completely safe.

Additionally, many extensions are heated while styling or dipped in boiled water, which can release toxic gases. These gases can enter the body through breathing and affect the users as well as the hair stylists. Some people have also reported problems like itching, burning, skin reaction and difficulty in breathing after using them. Experts believe that there is a lack of clear rules in this industry, due to which the safety of consumers is not being completely ensured.
