studies and early journey
Vikram Doraiswami has studied Masters in History from Delhi University. During his studies, he had a keen interest in understanding the history and history of different countries of the world. Before joining government service, he also worked as a journalist for some time. This experience gave him an opportunity to understand the society and the world closely.
Entry into Foreign Service in 1992
Vikram Doraiswami joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in the year 1992. After this, his training took place in New Delhi, where he learned the nuances of diplomacy. After completion of his training, his first major foreign posting was in Hong Kong. Here he was posted as third secretary in 1994.

Chinese language and understanding
While living in Hong Kong, he decided to learn Chinese language. He studied at the Language Center of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and gained a good command of the Chinese language. This step proved to be very important for his career, because later on he got the opportunity to do many important works related to China.
Have lived in Beijing before
Vikram Doraiswami was sent to the Indian Embassy in Beijing in 1996, where he worked for about four years. During this time, he closely understood China’s politics, society and way of working. Before going to China, Vikram Doraiswami was working as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. There he played an important role in strengthening relations between India and Britain.
