Smart Vision Glasses: What if you can’t see? Now you will know the world by ‘hearing’, AIIMS gives special smart glasses

How AI Glasses Help Blind People In India: Taking an important step towards connecting the disabled with the mainstream through technology, AIIMS on Monday distributed AI based smart vision glasses to 53 blind and severely visually impaired people. These special glasses convert visuals into sound, allowing users to “hear” the world around them. This device is capable of reading printed text, identifying objects, recognizing faces, identifying obstacles on the way and helping in navigation. Let us tell you how it works and how it will benefit people who cannot see.

Makes everyday life easier

Equipped with real-time object recognition and text-to-speech technology, these glasses make everyday tasks easier, whether reading medicine labels, identifying notes or finding the way to a door. The beneficiaries included 28 children from a blind school located in Amar Colony and 25 adults associated with Dr. RP Centre, AIIMS. Among them were those patients of low-vision and rehabilitation clinics who have irreparable visual loss.

What do experts say?

This equipment, worth about Rs 35,000, was made available free of cost under ‘Project Drishti’. This initiative is being run with the support of Rotary, Vision Aid and other partners. According to Dr. Praveen Vashishtha, associated with the Department of Community Ophthalmology of AIIMS, this initiative is being implemented as a structured research project. The beneficiaries will be followed-up every month for one year, so that the changes in their life quality can be assessed. The results of the study will also be documented and published. So that further work can be done on it.

a big problem in india

Nearly one crore people in India are suffering from blindness or severe blindness. While many cases are treatable, some patients suffer from conditions such as advanced glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration or optic nerve damage that cannot be resolved by surgery. In such a situation, rehabilitation becomes the only path to an independent life. Developed by SHG Technologies, these smart glasses are now in their fifth version. Earlier models were relatively heavy and button-based, while the new edition is lighter, sensor-based and equipped with more advanced AI capabilities. Experts believe that such AI-based assistive technology is not an alternative to clinical treatment, but a strong complement to it, which gives new strength to blind people towards becoming self-reliant.
