Use of AI increased in radiology, this danger is scared with benefits

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasing in every field and medical field is also no different. Especially AI is increasing rapidly in test of tests like radiology i.e. X-ray, MRI. However, questions are also being raised about the privacy of patients and security of data. Recently, Dr. Suvrankar Dutta (KCDH, Ashoka University) and Dr. Pradosh Kumar Sarangi (AIIMS Deoghar) spoke in detail in the Indian Journal of Radiology and Imaging. He warned that the use of AI is accelerating, but the correct investigation and evaluation is not being done as fast. He says that if AI is to be used properly in radiology, then there is a need to make phase wise strategy for this.

How is AI helping in radiology?

AI and large language models (LLMS) are being used in many ways in radiology. These techniques are helping doctors to make reports, check patients and make hospital functions easier. For example, with the help of AI, photos of X -ray or MRI can be understood quickly and accurately. These technology not only save time, but also helps doctors to take better decisions. However, there are some challenges with it, the biggest concern is the protection of patients’ data.

What is the reason for the problem?

When AI models work on cloud, personal information of patients such as their medical history or test report can go out of the country’s boundaries. This may threaten privacy. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 clearly states that their sensitive data cannot be sent abroad without the consent of the patient. In such a situation, Dr. Dutta and Dr. Sarangi suggest that the AI model should be made and run inside the hospital. This will protect the data and will also be able to follow the legal rules.

3-step roadmap can be effective

Doctors have advised to make a 3-step roadmap to use AI safely and effectively. Let’s know about it.

  • Before use (pre-deployment): The AI system should be thoroughly investigated before using the system. This includes investigation of technical tests as well as all aspects related to safety. It is necessary to ensure that the AI system is working correctly and safely.
  • During use (deployment): When the AI system starts in the hospital, it should be implemented in a controlled manner. This means that in the beginning it should be tried on a small level, so that if there is any mistake, it can be caught quickly.
  • After use (post-definition): It is necessary to monitor the AI system continuously. Its performance should be investigated and if any deficiency is seen, it should be corrected immediately.

AI and hospital system coordination

Doctors say that it is very important to connect AI with the current system of the hospital with electronic health records (EHR) and reporting systems. If AI had to run on different platforms, then both the time and hard work of doctors can increase. Apart from this, AI can do many things with the new technology called agentic workflow itself. As he can find guidelines, can help make decisions and create follow-up schedules for patients. This method has proved quite fast and useful in the initial test. However, there is a problem in it. If AI makes a mistake in a step, then that mistake can increase more in further steps. In such a situation, strict investigation of AI tools and monitoring of specialist doctors is very important.

AI’s job help, not take place

Dr. Dutta and Dr. Sarangi have made it clear that the aim of AI is not to replace the doctors. Its job is to help doctors, make their work easier and intensify. The final decision should always be taken to the radiologist. AI is just a tool, which helps doctors to give correct information and improve their work.
