Why Do I Feel Breathless After Climbing Stairs: Climbing stairs may seem like a normal part of everyday life, but according to doctors, this small activity can tell a lot about heart health. When we climb stairs, the body needs more oxygen. In such a situation, the heart starts beating faster and works harder to supply blood to the muscles. This process is normal, but the real indicator comes from how quickly the body returns to normal after climbing the stairs.
What can you identify from this?
Cardiologists call this heart rate recovery i.e. the speed of heart beat becoming normal. If breathing and heartbeat return to normal quickly after climbing stairs, then it is considered a sign of good cardiovascular fitness. But if breathing remains labored for a long time or it takes more time for the heartbeat to return to normal, it may be a sign of increasing pressure on the heart and blood vessels.
What do experts say?
Dr Ashish Aggarwal told TOI that many people do not understand that even a simple activity like climbing stairs can provide important information about heart health. He says that when we climb stairs, the body needs more oxygen, so it is natural for the heart beat to increase. But if the body takes more time than necessary to return to normal, it may be a sign of the heart and blood vessels not functioning properly.

Experts say that the recovery speed of the heart depends on how efficiently the heart is pumping blood, how easily the arteries are delivering oxygen to the body and how well the muscles are able to utilize that oxygen. If any part of this process is affected, it may take longer for the body to return to normal.
Why is the problem happening?
Modern lifestyle is also becoming a major reason for this problem. Working while sitting for a long time, unbalanced eating habits, smoking, stress and less physical activity can gradually weaken the heart and blood vessels. Due to this the arteries start hardening and blood flow gets affected. Although shortness of breath every time you climb stairs is not a sign of a serious illness, it can also happen due to fatigue, dehydration or low fitness. But if you feel shortness of breath, chest pressure, dizziness or extreme fatigue for a long time after climbing stairs, then it should not be ignored.
