Shwaasa AI App: Cough in front of the phone, the app will tell the condition of the lungs! AIIMS approves this AI app, know how it works

How Shwaasa AI App Detects COPD Through Cough: A Karnataka startup has developed an AI-based mobile app ‘Shwasa’, which has been approved by AIIMS. It is believed that this app can prove to be helpful in removing a major deficiency related to testing in the primary health system of the country. This app, through a special algorithm technology, screens patients for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is a major cause of diseases in India.

Test done in AIIMS Delhi

AIIMS-Delhi tested it on 460 people at its Ballabhgarh center last year. When compared with spirometry, which is considered the standard test in this area, the results of the app were found to be satisfactory. Especially in serious cases, its accuracy was stronger. It was found to be approximately 90 percent accurate in distinguishing between normal and abnormal cases, while its accuracy in identifying diseases like COPD and asthma was between 82 to 87 percent.

What do experts say

COPD is the second leading cause of the disease in India, but spirometry facilities are not available in most district hospitals and primary health centres. Dr Harshal Ramesh Salve, associated with AIIMS, who was part of the test, said, “Even many district hospitals do not have the facility of spirometry. It is mostly limited to medical colleges.”

Can use quite easily

The way the app works is quite simple. The patient just has to cough into the smartphone. The microphone of the phone records the sound of cough and the AI software installed in it immediately analyzes it. Within a few minutes it tells whether the lungs are normal or whether signs of COPD or asthma are visible. The entire test is completed in about eight minutes. Unlike spirometry, this app does not require any special tests or heavy equipment to run. This is the reason why it is being considered useful for resource limited areas. AIIMS doctors have suggested that where spirometry is not available, it can be used in primary and secondary health centres, and even Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.

Test is also being done regarding TV
AIIMS is also assessing its usefulness in TV screening under a separate research project. At present this equipment is being used in some states including Karnataka. There are plans to further expand its use by involving private doctors in Faridabad so that its results can be recorded.
