Punjab school SMS alert system: To further strengthen the system of government schools in Punjab, the state government is going to implement a new system from April 1. Under this, if a student does not come to school, his parents will immediately get information through SMS. The special thing is that this system will not be limited to students only, but the information about teacher’s absence will also be sent to the parents. The purpose of this step is to increase attendance in schools and bring transparency in the education system. Regarding this system, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has said that accountability is necessary to strengthen education. In this direction, this SMS alert system is being started, so that parents can be directly connected with their children’s education.
How will SMS alert system work?
Under the new system, after the opening of the school, it will be mandatory to register the attendance of students online within the stipulated time. As soon as a student is marked absent, an SMS will be sent to his/her parents’ mobile. If a student does not come to school for two consecutive days, the school staff will contact the family directly and try to find out the reason for being absent. For this, a new attendance module has been added on the e-Punjab portal, through which the entire process will be conducted in real time.

Keep an eye on teachers’ absence also
A major feature of this system is that teacher absence will also be monitored. If any teacher is absent, his/her information will also be sent to the parents. Through this, efforts are being made to increase accountability in schools and strengthen the confidence of parents.

Information about this initiative has been given during the mega parent-teacher meetings organized across the state. More than 18 lakh parents participated in this program. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh said that this is one of the biggest school community engagement campaigns in the country. During this period, not only report cards were distributed in schools, but children’s education, behavior and development were discussed in detail. Besides, exhibition of students’ projects and health related awareness programs were also organised. In this new system, the school principal has been made the nodal officer. It will be their responsibility to ensure that all teachers register their attendance on time and that their parents’ mobile numbers remain properly updated on the portal. Action will also be taken at the school level in case of students who are continuously absent.
This initiative is part of a bigger plan for education reform.
This step is part of the comprehensive education reform campaign of the Punjab government. With this initiative, the government aims to improve the quality of government schools and bring them at par with private schools. For this, a huge provision has been made in the education budget and many new schemes have been started. With this change, Punjab has now joined those states where technology is being used to monitor attendance in schools.
