The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a big initiative to change the way of studying for students. The board has approved the implementation of Open Book Assessment (OBA) in class 9 under the National Curriculum Framework (NCFSE 2023). This change will start from academic session 2026-27. Under this scheme, there will be a pen-paper examination thrice a year, which will include the main subjects like language, mathematics, science and social science.
Why is the open book assessment important?
The aim of NCFSE 2023 is to bring students out of the habit of rote, to think and understand and go into the depth of the subject. In the traditional examination, where children read and remember and write the same, they will get a chance to solve the question with the book in OBA. But this does not mean that the examination will be easier, but to answer here, the ability of understanding and analysis will be more important.
What was revealed in the pilot project?
Earlier a pilot was studied, in which the students’ performance was closely analyzed. It focused on cross-cutting topics i.e. such subjects which are related to different subjects. Avoiding the material of additional studies, the students were tested on the basis of their syllabus. During this time, the scores of the students were between 12% to 47%.
According to the report, OBA saw improvement in students’ thinking and ability to solve questions.
What do teachers say?
During the study, teachers were also consulted. Most teachers appeared in favor of this new way. He says that OBA will take students to understand the subject instead of remembering only. However, some teachers also admitted that initially some students may find it difficult to adjust to this pattern.
Clean and balanced question papers will be prepared for OBA, so that the level of examination is the same for all students.
