Nowadays, the trend of hair extensions is increasing rapidly to make the hair look long, thick and stylish. Applying extensions along with makeup on special occasions has become the choice of many people. A recent study has raised serious questions about this trend. Research has claimed that hundreds of dangerous chemicals have been found in many hair extensions sold in the market, which can increase the risk of problems ranging from cancer to hormone disruption and infertility. In such a situation, let us tell you today that if you also get hair extensions done with makeup every time, then be cautious and know how it can cause cancer.
What came out in the study?
This study, done by Silent Spring Institute, was published in the journal Environment & Health on February 11. Researchers examined 43 types of hair extension products, which included synthetic hair, human hair, braiding hair and eyelash extensions. More than 900 chemicals were detected during the investigation, but only 169 could be identified. That means, more than 80 percent of the chemicals were such whose information is not available in the scientific database. At least one cancer-related chemical has been found in almost every sample. At the same time, plastic stabilizer named organotin was found in about 10 percent of the samples at such levels, which are considered more than the safe limit in Europe.
What risks are associated with its use?
This research has revealed that the chemicals that have been identified are associated with many serious health problems. Such as skin and scalp irritation, itching and rashes, hormonal disturbances, risk of cancer, effect on fertility and uterine fibroids, early puberty in children, obesity and effect on the nervous system. Apart from this, chemicals like organotin, phthalates, styrene and acrylonitrile have been said to be of particular concern. There are some substances which are considered very poisonous in other industries.
More impact on black women
According to the report, hair extensions are used most among black women. More than 70 percent of black women wear hair extensions at least once a year. Many people keep them on for weeks, which increases the risk of prolonged exposure to chemicals. At the same time, experts say that endocrine disrupting chemicals may be linked to problems like uterine fibroids, which are seen more in black women than before.
Toxic gases are released when hair extensions are set.
When hot water or heat styling tools are used to set hair extensions, some harmful gases may be released. This can cause irritation in the eyes, nose and throat, headache and increase the risk of serious diseases in the long run. Apart from this, it has also been revealed in the report that there are no strict safety standards regarding these products in the beauty industry. Many companies do not even share complete information about the chemicals used in their products. You may unknowingly take risks by using this product.
What is the safe option?
Two such products have been mentioned in the research, in which no dangerous chemicals were found. However, safer options are usually expensive. Some people adopt the method of washing with apple cider vinegar before applying extensions, which can cause some hair loss. But this does not guarantee complete security. Experts say that for this, people should be aware and avoid using excessive chemical products. Besides, pressure should also be put on the companies to provide complete information about their products.
