esim fraud: ESIM is a digital sim which is installed in your smartphone through software. It offers all facilities like calls, messages and data, which does a physical sim. But cyber criminals have now started misusing this technology. If a hacker converts your physical sim into ESIM without your knowledge, then it can get your bank’s OTP and Authentication Code. With this, they get complete control on your bank account.
Big cyber attack in Mumbai
A similar fraud case came up recently with a person from Mumbai. The incident took place very fast, the victim received a call from an unknown number. The network of his phone went away in about 15 minutes. By the time he blocked his ATM card, UPI and bank account, by then 4 lakh rupees had come out of his account. Investigation revealed that the criminals had sent a link which the victim accidentally clicked. From the same link, his SIM was converted into ESIM which was under the control of the hacker.
How does this scam work?
When your SIM is converted into ESIM, the fraudsters start receiving all your calls and OTP. In the normal SIM swap, where only SMS is affected, ESIM also reaches through OTP calls, which makes fraud and fast and difficult to identify.
How to avoid ESIM Fraud
- Do not click on any unknown link, whether it comes by SMS or email.
- Do not give any information in the name of SIM or ESIM verification from unknown callers.
- Never share through your personal and banking detail phones or messages.
- Where possible, keep multi-factor authentication on.
- Suddenly, when the network disappears, inform your telecom operator immediately.
