How Air Pollution Affects Children In Delhi: Air pollution has wreaked havoc in Delhi for the last few years. Regarding this, a new report of Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group has revealed that the increasing air pollution in Delhi-NCR is having a deep impact on the health, mental condition, studies and everyday life of children. This study was prepared based on conversations with 1,257 children aged 6 to 15 years between December 2025 and January 2026, when pollution was at its peak. Of these, 86 percent children believed that polluted air is directly harming their health. After October 2025, about 44 percent of children had to go to the doctor and many children had to be treated more than once due to problems like difficulty in breathing, cough, headache and fatigue.
What is mentioned in the report?
The report titled ‘A Generation Under Siege’ revealed that 77 percent of children said that toxic air makes them feel restless, irritable, scared or stressed. About 46.6 percent children said that if given a chance, they would like to leave Delhi-NCR. The report also revealed that the impact of pollution is not limited to children only, but their parents, siblings and grandparents are also falling ill. About 55 percent of the children admitted that due to health problems related to pollution, they had to take leave from school, which also affected their studies.
Children try to save themselves
When the air becomes poisonous, children definitely try to protect themselves. About 85 percent of the children adopted some kind of protection. Of these, 39 percent used N95 masks or air purifiers, while 37 percent thought it better to stay indoors or reduce outdoor activities. Despite this, 85 percent of the children reported feeling symptoms like burning sensation in the eyes, cough, headache and fatigue. It is clear that even after taking precautions, they are not feeling completely safe.
It has been told that even during severe pollution, many children are forced to go out to go to school, play sports or do other activities. In such a situation, it has been said that there is a need to prepare policies keeping the health of children and their experiences at the center. According to the report, only the average figures of the city will not suffice, but it will have to be understood what kind of air the children are breathing at home, school and in their daily journey.
