The method of teaching in schools is changing, and now the method of learning language is also going to be new. Children will be exposed to not just one or two, but three languages. Regarding this, the Central Board of Secondary Education has issued an important circular for all schools. It clearly states that teaching “third language (R3)” will be mandatory from class 6, and this system will be implemented from the session 2026-27.
It is also written in the circular that schools which have not yet started the third language, should implement it within 7 days. That means there is no scope for delay now. According to the new education policy, it is considered necessary to expose children to multiple languages, so that they can understand different languages and communicate better.
Schools can choose any recognized language
The board has given the freedom to schools that they can choose any recognized language of India as the third language. Books will come later, so schools can start studies with the material currently available. That is, there is no waiting, we have to start immediately. Schools have also been asked to enter the information about the chosen language in their regional office and on the OASIS portal. This is necessary so that the board knows which school is teaching which language.
The language once selected will carry over
One important thing in the circular is that the language which will start in class 6 will continue till class 9 and 10. Therefore, the choice of language at this level will have to be done very thoughtfully. This decision will affect the further education of children. The regional officers of the board will collect information from the schools and see whether the rule has been implemented properly or not. That means studies should start in reality, not just on paper.
What will children learn through language?
The purpose of this third language is not only to read, but also to speak, understand and write. An “Annexure” has also been given along with the circular, in which it has been told what will be taught to the children.
