Big decision of CBSE, three languages will have to be studied from class 6, the method of study will change.

An important news has come to light for the students and parents studying in CBSE schools across the country. CBSE has decided to implement the new language policy from class 6 from the session 2026-27. Under this new system, now students will have to study three languages from class 6. This decision has been taken on the basis of the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

According to the new policy, from class 6 onwards students will have to study three languages, out of which at least two will be Indian. English as a third language will now be considered a foreign language. That means English will not remain the main language as before, rather it will be kept in the category of foreign language. Even if a school teaches French, German or any other foreign language, it will be necessary to teach two Indian languages.

What will change for students?

Till now only two languages were compulsory in most schools. After the new policy, students will have to learn an additional language. This will increase the scope of studies, but at the same time students will also get an opportunity to learn and understand new languages. CBSE believes that this will develop the thinking of children and they will be able to understand different languages and cultures.

Third language can continue till class 10

The National Curriculum Framework recommends that the study of all three languages should be continued till classes 9 and 10. According to sources, in the coming time, third language can also be included in the class 10 board exam. There is a possibility that in the 10th board examination to be held in the year 2031, students will also have to give the paper of third language.

New books and new syllabus

With this change, CBSE will also prepare new books and new syllabus. It has been decided how much knowledge and understanding the students have to develop in the third language. For this, education structure is being prepared at different levels. There are preparations to start teaching the third language of class 6 in nine Indian languages for the session 2026-27. These include languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali.

Why is more time being given to third language?

In the new system, classes 6 to 8 have been considered as middle stage. During this period, study of third language will be started and students will be given enough time to learn it. CBSE says that the third language may be completely new for many students. Therefore, practice and time are necessary to understand, speak and write it.

Culture and identity will be linked to language

According to the curriculum framework, language is not just a subject of study, but it is also a means of connecting with culture and society. There are many rich languages in India and each language has its own identity. When students learn more than one Indian language, they will be able to understand the diversity of the country better. This will also strengthen their sense of unity.
