Cyber Attack on Mexico: Mexico’s government network system has recently come into the limelight due to a major cyber attack. According to reports, hackers broke into the government system with the help of AI chatbot and stole about 150GB of sensitive information. It is being told that the stolen data included details of taxpayers, internal documents and login credentials of employees. AI tool Claude was allegedly used in this attack.
How was the attack carried out?
According to media information, this burglary started in December and continued for several weeks without being detected. Cyber security company Gambit Security, while tracking this activity, claimed that the attacker identified the vulnerabilities of the government network with the help of AI, prepared the script for the attack and expedited the process of extracting the data.
The most shocking thing was that initially the AI refused to cooperate in illegal activities, but through repeated and different instructions, the security limits were bypassed. In this way, detailed reports and possible attack plans were prepared from AI.
Company response and additional investigation
AI developing company Anthropic has confirmed an investigation into the incident. The company says that accounts associated with suspicious activities have been closed and additional security measures have been added to its new model to prevent misuse.
It was also revealed in the reports that the attacker also took the help of ChatGPT to gather technical information. However, OpenAI said it had identified attempts to violate the rules and many of the requests were blocked.
Who is responsible and what next?
Till now, there has been no official confirmation as to who is behind this attack. No organization has claimed responsibility but some experts are linking it to some foreign state-supported activity.
There has been limited response from Mexico. Some government agencies have claimed that their systems are secure, while cyber experts say that there were many major security flaws in government networks.
This incident once again shows that while advanced AI tools are opening new avenues of innovation, their misuse can also give rise to serious cyber threats. Now more than ever, the need for a more alert and strong system for digital security is being felt.
