Actually, there is a thin layer on the surface of our eyes which is called tear film. This layer keeps the eyes moist and makes them feel comfortable. When this balance gets disturbed, problems like dryness, itching or burning sensation start occurring in the eyes. Experts say that there are many habits in today’s lifestyle which gradually affect this balance.

According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, about 32 percent people in North India face the problem of dry eyes. Researchers believe that environment, age and everyday lifestyle play a big role behind this. Dry eye syndrome has now become one of the common eye related problems across the world. This condition occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears produced dry up quickly. Tears are not just water, but they also contain oil, mucus and some proteins which protect the eyes from infection and keep them lubricated. When this mix becomes unbalanced, the eyes start feeling burning and uncomfortable.

What are the reasons?
Increasing pollution in cities and excessive use of air conditioners also affects the eyes. Air conditioning reduces the humidity in the air, due to which tears start drying quickly. When we concentrate too much on something, like reading, writing or driving for a long time, the rate of blinking slows down. Due to this, the layer of tears does not spread properly on the surface of the eyes and dryness is felt. Allergies can also sometimes cause burning and itching in the eyes. Things like lint, dust, mold or pet hair can cause inflammation in the delicate skin around the eyes.
How can we protect ourselves?
Apart from this, lack of water in the body, lack of sleep or lack of nutrients like Vitamin A, D and Omega-3 can also increase dryness of eyes. Therefore, experts advise to drink enough water, give rest to the eyes from time to time and get the eyes checked if necessary. By changing small habits, eyes can be kept healthy for a long time.
